My kids, like many kids who grow up with cats as pets, love cat books! They love nonfiction books to learn about them and any fiction book they can find. These are our favorite kid’s cat books, from when they were babies up through books that even tweens will love.
Lost Cat
For a long time, agest 4-7, Lost Cat was my oldest’s absolute favorite book. It is cute, a little sad in the middle, and happy at the end.
Little Cat
For the littlest cat fan we love Little Cat. It is an adorable little book for your baby or toddler to read and play with.
Cat
Another baby and toddler favorite is Cat. A book of cute pictures and the occasionally pull out picture and of course my kid’s favorite page, the “CATastrophe!” page!
National Geographic Cats
The best nonfiction books come from National Geographic. The have several cute learn to read leveled readers including Cats and Play Kitty. My kids also love sticker books including Cats Sticker book and my 5 year olds think the Cats Joke Book is hilarious! For the child looking to dive farther into different types of cats there is even a Cat Breed Guide that we all found ver interested. If you are looking for a general pet book The Little Kids Big Book of Pets is part of my favorite absoulte favorite National Geographic series (all the “little kids big book”s) and is a great general book about all pets.
Have You Seen My Cat?
I love anything Eric Carle wrote (does anyone not like The Very Hungry Caterpillar) and Have You Seen My Cat? is not an exception. The Slide and peek version board book version is particularly cute.
If You Give a Cat a Cupcake
We are obviously a cat family so when my first child was born his aunt gave me If You Give a Cat a Cupcake. It is an adorable book about a cat who can not get enough.
Cat Science: Unleashed
If you are looking for a more interactive book and you have a cat at home Cat Science Unleashed has fun activities to do with your cat. They are great for kids of all ages, and maybe adults too.
Pet + Cat
For the lover of fictional cats the Peg + Cat books are cute plus educational. This series is about math facts but it is cleverly intertwined with the antics of a cat and her owner. My kids favorite is Peg + Cat: The Pizza Problem, a book about fractions!
Cat Kid Comic Club
If your child likes graphic novels or Captain Underpants and Dog Man books then Cat Kid Comic Club is the book for them. This graphic novel is fun, cute and graphic readers are great for older kids and tweens.
The Cat in The Hat
Dr Seuss’ classic Cat in the Hat is a wonderful book about a fictional cat and his friends’ adventures. There is also a great series of newer Cat in Hat Books that explore different science topics. My kids love There’s No Place Like Space and My Oh My–A Butterfly.
Pete The Cat
A newer fiction classic are the Pete The Cat books. These books have cute artwork and nice lessons. I quote Pete The Cat and His 4 Groovy Button‘s with some regularity (“Buttons Come, And Buttons Go…” right?). There are also Pete the Cat leveled readers which my oldest son has enjoyed.
Tales of An 8-Bit Kitten
If your child likes Minecraft then they will love the Tales Of an 8-Bit Kitten books. They are part of the Diary of an 8-Bit Warrior world which is a big hit with the Minecrafters around our house!
Cats for Kids
I hope you love these books as much as our family does. If you have a cat at home be sure to check out my articles on fun cat toys and why we love our cat tree! And if you are thinking about a cat check out why and how you can adopt a cat in the New Cat section of the blog.
